Answer: Human beings at their deepest level yearn for harmony. No human being enjoy disharmony or violence. Harmony is the fundamental law of creation; it is the law that continues to govern our life, said Cynthia Pandian, Vice-Chancellor, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. Presiding over a national-level seminar on `Conflict resolution and social harmony,' organised by Youth Red Cross of the university in Kanyakumari recently, she said that anthropologically harmony was nothing but being human, being at peace with oneself and with the divine and the cosmos. But etymologically harmony means `joint.' Harmony is understood as binding together and being in concord with one another and the cosmos. From a sociological perspective, harmony can be understood as a mode of social existence. Social harmony means living with unity, mutual reciprocity, beyond class, caste, creed and gender barriers. Sin or violence emerges whenever this harmony is disturbed. Harmony by itself cannot be disturbed. It needs an agent. Religious and communal harmony, economic harmony, political harmony and ecological harmony were necessary today. The people should realize that being in harmony with ecology was essential. The people needed a holistic approach towards creation of establishing social harmony. Unless we restore social harmony our future is in danger, the Vice-Chancellor concluded.
